Issue 3:

Trophy-tasic!

Recently a small team of Somerset Karate students took part in our first tournament as part of Great Britain Martial Arts Association. The rules are quite different from Tsuen-Mo-Luen rules that we use on grading day and at club.

Before getting out of the minibus in Egham, Surrey, Sempai Scoble told everyone to concentrate on getting points and that trophies would come later. The ten competitors, which included Sempai Scoble, did spectacularly better that that; each and every competitor from Somerset Karate won at least one trophy!

Congratulations and a huge well done to:

Cody Ralph, aged 8, got 3rd in Under 9 Kumite and 3rd in the Under 16 4-man Teams as part of The Warriors.

Liam Kitto, aged 9, got 3rd in Mixed Under 16 Under 150cm Kumite.

Jamie Newell, aged 9, got 3rd in Girls Under 16 Under 140cm Kumite and 3rd in the Under 16 4-man Teams as part of The Dragons.

Adam Scarborough, aged 10, got 3rd in Mixed Under 16 Under 140cm Kumite and 3rd in the Under 16 4-man Teams as part of The Warriors.

Matthew Biss, aged 10, got 3rd in Mixed Under 16 Under 150cm Kumite.

Heidi Silcox, aged 10, got joint 3rd in Under 16 Traditional Kata and 3rd in the Under 16 4-man Teams as part of The Dragons.

Thomas Lui, aged 10, got joint 3rd in Under 16 Traditional Kata.

Natalie Hughes, aged 12, got joint 3rd in Girls Under 16 Under 150cm Kumite, 3rd in Under 16 Traditional Kata and 3rd place in the Under 16 4-man Teams as part of The Dragons.

Henry Duke, aged 21, got 2nd in Men's Brown and Black Belts Under 75kg Kumite and 3rd in Adults Traditional Kata.

Sempai Mike Scoble got 3rd in Men's Brown and Black Belts Over 75kg Kumite and 2nd in Adults Weapons Kata.

Wow! Can't wait for the next one!

Sempai's Learning Tip No 1

Practising for 10 minutes everyday can really make a difference. If you can't physically do the technique explain to someone else, or write it down. This is called 'The 10 Minute Rule'.

If you leave your lesson and don't practise at all until your next lesson one week later you return remembering only 5% of what you did in that lesson. If you leave your lesson and don't practise at all until your next lesson one week later you return remembering only 5% of what you did in that lesson.

If you tell someone else what you did in class (they don't have to understand they just have to listen!) either on your way home or when you get home, you return the next week remembering 15% of what you did.

If you go home and do some kind of practise (that includes reading your syllabus) for only 10 minutes everyday you return the following week remembering a huge 80% of what you did the week before.

Which one would you rather have?

Nippersaurus Page

In the Nippersaurus class Nippers will now be awarded "smiles" for working hard, trying hard or best technique.

Try hard at Nippersaurus Class and you will earn a "smile" sticker.

When you have a "smile" sticker make sure you tell Sempai, who will stamp your 'Smile Card'. You must be able to tell Sempai what you got your "smile" for.

5 "smiles" = a tag
3 tags = a star in your licence and a small prize
